Nearly two decades ago, I taught English to Ferdy, a fifth-grader who was among my brightest students. He was unique: impeccably neat and prone to self-talk, a habit that, while strange to his peers, didn't impede his comprehension. In fact, his English skills surpassed those of students in junior high. I later learned Ferdy was on the autism spectrum, likely exhibiting hyperlexia, an exceptional early reading ability that often coexists with social communication challenges.

While Ferdy's peers often responded to his differences with confusion and negativity, I quickly recognized his unique excellence. His case highlighted a crucial truth: autism means different, not deficient.

Bridging the Misunderstanding with Teman Autis

The key word in autism is difference. All too often, people mistakenly view children with autism as "weird" or "idiots" because their behaviors—such as repetitive actions or verbalizations—fall outside typical social norms. This misunderstanding breeds suspicion and avoidance.

This is the gap Teman Autis aims to bridge. Co-founded by Alvinia Christiany and Ratih Hadiwinoto, the community was launched in 2017 (initially as the Light It Up Project) with the goal of providing trusted, integrated information about autism and increasing public awareness.

Their main resource is the website, temanautis.com, designed to be a simple, clean, and cost-effective portal. It connects families across Indonesia with valid information, resources, and necessary support facilities—a critical function for those unable to travel to urban centers like Jakarta for guidance.

Advocacy in Action: From City Walks to Human Rights

Teman Autis actively champions its philosophy that acceptance is a matter of human rights.

In their Light It Up Fun Walk (July 2017) at the Sudirman Car Free Day, they engaged the public, distributing brochures and carrying a powerful slogan: "Autism is not a disability, it’s a different ability." This message directly refutes the notion that autistic individuals deserve to be underestimated or bullied.

Following successful public events, the team reformulated their mission, giving birth to Teman Autis with a clearer vision: to generate real social contributions. They emphasize that autism is a developmental disorder, distinct from conditions like schizophrenia or depression, and note that the Indonesian Act on People with Disabilities guides acceptance.

Proof of Potential: Global Success Stories

The organization’s optimism is grounded in real-world success, proving that people with autism can be fully empowered and achieve extraordinary things:

  • Susan Boyle: The Scottish singer, who rose to fame on Britain's Got Talent, has Asperger’s Syndrome (a form of high-functioning autism). Despite being wrongly diagnosed as a child, she has achieved immense commercial success and won multiple awards, demonstrating that social difficulties do not preclude great talent.

  • Stephen Wiltshire: Featured in Oliver Sacks' book, An Anthropologist on Mars, Wiltshire possesses the remarkable ability to draw highly detailed cityscapes from memory after seeing them only once. This photographic memory has allowed him to travel the world, capturing cities like Rome and New York, and highlighting the unique cognitive strengths found on the spectrum.

The Power of Teman (Friendship) and National Recognition

Alvinia Christiany and Teman Autis's relentless effort to foster an inclusive society—where adults and children with autism can grow and progress—is truly commendable. Their belief that "Autism Acceptance = Human Rights" drives their mission to provide essential information, particularly connecting families to relevant clinics.

This dedication was recognized in 2022 when Alvinia was honored with the prestigious Semangat Astra Terpadu Untuk (SATU) Indonesia Awards from PT Astra International, Tbk. This award affirmed the significant impact her focused, benevolence-driven work has had across the archipelago.

True to its name, Teman Autis embodies the energy of friendship, urging us all to remain optimistic and collaboratively rise above obstacles. The organization’s ultimate mission is to build the nation through sustainable compassion, where we strengthen each other rather than competing in enmity.

The success of Teman Autis is a testament to the power of youth-led advocacy in turning difference into a source of strength, ultimately contributing to a more diverse and accepting Indonesia.

Saya dan istri tiba di teras rumah kira-kira pukul 8.30 malam. Saya pulang mengajar les di kursusan sementara dia pulang mengajar ngaji di sebuah TPQ.
